Raw kWh cannot rank stores

Putting two stores’ bills side by side is misleading. One may be twice the size, one may sit in a warmer region, one may trade later. A comparison on raw consumption blames the large store every single time.

The panel normalises consumption for floor area, climate and trading hours. Only what remains after those corrections comes from how the site is run, and only that is worth investigating.

The outlier list is produced every month without anyone asking. A regional manager does not read hundreds of rows, only the handful that crossed the line.

What is still running when the doors are shut?

The power a store draws after closing is its true base load. Chilled cabinets and security systems belong in that load. Air conditioning, signage and general lighting do not.

Out-of-hours consumption looks small per site. Multiplied across a hundred sites it becomes the single largest saving of the year, and correcting it is a setting, not a capital project.

Portfolio

Not the average, the spread

Management reports describe a portfolio with a single average. Yet two chains can share an average and be in completely different shape: in one the sites cluster tightly, in the other there is a long tail.

The panel normalises every site onto the same axis. Where the cluster sits, how far the tail runs and how many sites cross the threshold are all visible at once.

The length of the tail is an investment decision: if a handful of sites drift badly, the work is at those sites; if the whole distribution has shifted right, the problem is the chain’s standard rather than any one branch.

Control

What runs overnight should switch itself off

Seeing the outlier is the first step; correcting it without travelling there is the second. Across hundreds of sites, a visit for every deviation is neither possible nor necessary.

The remote control module brings signage, window displays, external lighting and office HVAC onto a central calendar. Opening and closing times come from the trading calendar, and signage follows sunset rather than a fixed hour.

Reactive charges and generators join the same picture. At larger sites the hours when compensation slips into the charge band are counted; where a generator is fitted, fuel level and test intervals are tracked centrally rather than asked site by site.

Region 2 · 03 drew an average of 6.4 kW while closed, against 2.1 kW at comparable sites in the same format: the HVAC group stayed on overnight and no shutdown command was ever issued. Region 3 · 19 is 38% above expectation on refrigeration at 4.8 kW, which points at an overdue condenser clean. Region 4 · 07 only drifts on Friday nights, where the signage schedule does not cover the weekend calendar. The first two need a site visit; the third can be fixed from the panel.

Installation cost falls per site

In retail the cost of installation scales with points, and most sites need only a single main meter. Larger stores add separate metering on HVAC and refrigeration.
